Muskogee Wins State Football Championship

EDMOND — Muskogee High School defeated Stillwater, 28-26, to win the Class 6A II state football championship Friday at Chad Richison Stadium in Edmond.

It is the Roughers’ 10th state football championship — their first since 1986.

Stillwater scored with less than 30 seconds remaining the game to pull within two points.

Muskogee stopped Stillwater’s two-point conversion attempt with 20 seconds left in the game. Stillwater’s onside kick attempt failed and Muskogee took over and ran out the clock.

The Roughers opened scoring on a 2-yard run by Javarian Ficklin with 3:17 remaining in the first quarter.

Stillwater tied the score at 7 on an 18-yard run by Talon Kendrick with 11:02 remaining the second quarter.

The teams traded touchdowns late in the second quarter.

Muskogee took a 14-7 lead on a 25-yard pass from Ficklin to Ondraye Beasley with 1:38 remaining in the half.

Stillwater countered with a 14-yard touchdown catch by Kendrick. The Pioneers tied the score at 14 with 12 seconds remaining in the half.

The Roughers defeated Tulsa Booker T. Washington, 14-12, to win the Class 5A championship in 1986.

Muskogee opened the second half with a 64-yard drive capped by a 19-yard run by Ficklin to take a 21-14 lead.

The Pioneers scored on a 1-yard run, but missed the extra point, leaving Stillwater trailing, 21-20 with 6:56 to go in the third.

The Roughers increased their lead to eight, 28-20, with 3:24 remaining in the third on a 3-yard run by Ficklin.

The Roughers stopped the Pioneers on fourth down at the Muskogee 11-yard line with 10:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. Muskogee took 6:35 off the clock on a drive that ended on the Stillwater 23-yard line. The Pioneers recovered a fumble and took over with 3:41 remaining in the game.
